If you choose to pursue therapy one route to go is with Cognitive Behavior Therapy [CBT]. It is an evidence-based psychotherapy that effectively treats many mental health disorders and conditions through thousands of research studies. CBT is based on the cognitive model originally developed by Dr. Aaron Beck. It explains that how an individual thinks and feels about a situation determines their behavior much more than the situation itself.

CBT is structured, present-focused, and time-limited. During meetings therapists collaborate with clients to help them identify their goals and aspirations, develop action plans to move towards these goals, and overcome obstacles that get in the way. CBT therapists help their clients develop skills to change their thoughts and behaviors, which results in long-term improvement in mood and functioning and an increased sense of well-being.

Therapy can be conducted either in person or using telehealth video conferencing.

CBT has proven effective in treating a variety of mental health issues such as:

  • Anxiety, depression, phobias, OCD, PTSD

  • Eating disorders and substance abuse disorders

  • Sleeping issues such as insomnia

  • Chronic pain such as fibromyalgia

  • Everyday life challenges

The Beck Institute therapists are trained and certified to provide CBT as are many other therapists.
