Let’s talk about the brain

Like it or not, our response to life events is largely controlled by our limbic system, which is an intricate network of brain regions responsible for managing emotions, memory, learning, motivation, and behavior. It is the ancient part of our brain.

Chronic stress, anxiety, or depression can lead to physical health issues such as high blood pressure, weakened immune response, and digestive problems.

Other ways that our limbic system affects our well being:

  • Stress response is important because prolonged stress can affect our immune system.

  • Proper functioning of the limbic system is vital for memory formation and learning.

  • The limbic system influences motivation and behavior. For instance depression can lead to changes in motivation levels and affect physical health by impacting lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, and sleep patterns.

  • The limbic system is the mind-body connection. It acts as a bridge between thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. It exemplifies the mind-body connection, and its effect on our well being.

Can therapy affect the limbic system?

The short answer is yes. While research in this area is ongoing, there's evidence suggesting that psychotherapy and other psychological interventions can potentially bring about neurobiological changes, including those in the limbic system. These changes contribute to improved emotional regulation, stress management, and overall mental health.

What about kids?

The Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy is very concerned with the mental health of our children and adolescents.

Every child’s path to adulthood—reaching developmental and emotional milestones, learning healthy social skills, and dealing with problems—is different and difficult. …

But the challenges today’s generation of young people face are unprecedented and uniquely hard to navigate. And the effect these challenges have had on their mental health is devastating. … That’s why I am issuing this Surgeon General’s Advisory.

Mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real, and they are widespread. But most importantly, they are treatable, and often preventable.”

“Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: It is easier to say: “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.” - C. S. Lewis

What people are saying about SelfView

“I am so grateful to have taken SelfView. i was always nervous in large social situations and although i got through them it was never fun. I chalked this up to being the way i am and went on. But SelfView indicated that i have social anxiety disorder - who knew? Actually this is easily treatable with a pill that i take 30 minutes before a party or a speech and presto I’m relaxed and enjoy the evening. The medication wears off in about 6 hours so there are no side effects. it’s a bit like Cinderella i guess and it’s fabulous and the medication is available from your primary care doctor.” - B.V. verified user

“I took SelfView out of curiosity because I was a little concerned that I might have issues with depression. I did code yellow for depression which is a relief and I will keep an eye on that in the future. Thank you SelfView for my peace of mind.” - G.D. verified user

“Generally, I feel pretty good, but when I saw the SelfView test online, I thought it would be interesting to see what results would be generated. I found the test to be very easy to go through. It took me less than ten minutes to finish the assessment.  One of the most amazing things was the immediate availability of the results.   What did I find out?  First, as I suspected, SelfView wanted to make me aware that the amount of alcohol consumed could negatively impact me. The surprise was that SelfView indicated that I was showing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms.  This led me to consider the possible causes, and over the next few weeks, I realized that there were several issues I had never really allowed myself to deal with in any healing way.  Amongst the resources I found on the SelfView site was an article about PTSD that I found very beneficial, and links to professional support were provided in case I was interested.  Thanks for this testing protocol.”  - A.S. verified user

“The last few years have been hard on everyone in one way or another. I put off taking the assessment out of fear of the results. But I'm so glad I took it!!
It minimized many of my concerns and gave me a clear direction on the things that are holding me back from living my fullest and happiest life. I know how to get the help I deserve, and I'm so excited and grateful. I'm ready to embrace my new world.”
Thank you, Selfview🙏
